The History of Walters Buildings

Our History in Post-Frame Design, Engineering, & Construction

Rooted in Craftsmanship. Growing Through Innovation.

For more than six decades, Walters Buildings has dotted the rural landscape of Wisconsin, Illinois, Kentucky and the greater Midwest with structures built on integrity and hard work. What began as Jack Waters’ small post-frame building company in 1958 has grown into one of the most trusted names in post-frame construction, known for combining old-fashioned integrity with forward-thinking design.

Rooted Craftsmanship

1958

A Foundation of Integrity

Jack Walters & a Dream

After returning home from World War II, Jack Walters settled with his wife, Alice, on a modest 40-acre farm near Kohlsville, Wisconsin. By the late 1950s, Jack had built a reputation among local dairy farmers as a dependable problem-solver. When those farmers began asking for better, longer-lasting barns, Jack answered by starting Jack Walters & Sons Corp in 1958.

Armed with a small crew, borrowed equipment, and an unwavering belief that “if you’re going to build it, build it right,” Jack laid the groundwork for a company defined by honesty, craftsmanship, and customer trust.

1960s – 1980s

Expanding a Family Business

From Local Builder to Midwest Partner

As demand for dependable farm structures grew, Jack’s sons Jim and Bill joined the business, helping expand operations throughout southern Wisconsin and into Illinois and Iowa. During these decades, Walters Buildings opened regional offices and began assembling dedicated field crews to ensure every project carried the same quality Jack demanded from day one.

By the early 1980s, the company had completed thousands of agricultural and light-commercial buildings and had established its headquarters in Allenton, Wisconsin—still home to the company today.

1990s – 2000s

Engineering a Better Way to Build

Adding Design, Manufacturing, and In-House Innovation

The 1990s brought a new era of modernization. Walters Buildings invested in in-house engineering and developed a computer-aided design (CAD) software solution to improve precision and efficiency.

To support growth and maintain quality control, the company added truss and column manufacturing facilities in Fairfield, Illinois, and expanded its network of regional project managers across the Midwest.

When Scott Walters—the third generation—became President in 2007, he focused on integrating design, manufacturing, and construction under one roof, ensuring that every component met Walters’ standards before it reached the jobsite.

2010s – Today

Built for Generations

A Legacy of Craftsmanship Continues

In 2024, Zach Walters became President, representing the fourth generation of family leadership.

Today, Walters Buildings continues to grow with offices and crews serving Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Kentucky, and Ohio. Each project—whether a farm shop in Dodge County, an equestrian barn in Lexington, or a commercial storage complex in rural Illinois—is engineered, manufactured, and constructed by Walters’ own teams using 28-gauge G-90 steel, STP laminated columns, and BeckryTech™ 35-year finishes.

While tools and technology have advanced, the promise remains unchanged: to build every structure as if it were our own and to treat every customer like a neighbor.

Looking Ahead

Tradition Meets Tomorrow

From Jack Walters’ first barn on a Wisconsin hillside to today’s custom post-frame projects across the Midwest, the company’s story has always been about people — builders who take pride in their work and customers who believe in doing things the right way.

As Walters Buildings looks toward the future, we continue to blend heritage and innovation, ensuring that the same values that started on a small Wisconsin farm keep shaping rural properties for generations to come.

Four generations later, the company itself stands as proof of our promise: built for today, built for tomorrow, built for generations.
